Making a Wrongful Termination Claim/Lawsuit in Oklahoma
The term “wrongful termination” is misleading because in this state and most other
states, without a written agreement for a specific term, employment is “at will.”
This means that employers can fire or terminate you for any reason, or for no reason
at all, unless:
a) Your rights are protected under employment discrimination laws. Employers cannot
discriminate against you on the basis of age, race, gender, marital status, sexual
preference or disability.
b) You have an employment contract, either written or implied, with the employer,
who agreed that you cannot be fired without just cause for a specific time period.
The terms of the contract will usually specify the reasons for which you can
be fired.
Otherwise, employers can legally terminate employees for any reason or for no reason
at all. Employers may fire you if they don’t like you, or even if they just don’t
like the type of clothes you’re wearing. In other words, it is not illegal for employers
to be mean-spirited when they fire you.
However, if you believe you have been fired for questionable reasons that may constitute
employment discrimination in any form, or a breach of a contract, then you should
consider discussing your concerns with an attorney.
You can hire John Mac as your lawyer regardless of whether you live in the greater
Oklahoma city region. Most Oklahoma state cities are served by the attorney:
Tulsa, Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Norman, Lawton, Midwest City, Shawnee, Stillwater,
Edmond, Moore, Muskogee, Enid, and Ponca City.
